When I first heard the Bee Gees on the radio, I was hooked...at 7 years old! My parents must have noticed my enthusiasm for the band and gifted me a Bee Gees cassette tape on my 8th birthday. I played that cassette nonstop in the house, to and from school, and on road trips with my dad and brothers. I think the tape itself actually melted at some point. 'Tragedy' was one of my faves on that album.

My maternal grandmother set the standard for women role models for me. A successful actress, independently wealthy, sophisticated & worldly by her early 20s, she later married Earl & raised five children including my mother. Madeleine appeared in the 'Wizard Of Oz," "Gone With The Wind," and many other popular films of her time. My earliest memories of music were of her, as she would play songs like 'Over The Rainbow' in her apartment when I visited her in the summers. She was a great woman.

Only a year to go until we were 6th graders – future kings & queens of Monte Vista Elementary. As 5th graders, we could sit near the back of the bus, *almost* next to the 6th graders. But they still had control over the radio station requests to the bus driver. When this song came out, I remember how it brought everyone on the bus together – headbanging in unison! What a time to be alive!

I vividly remember this song on a lot of camping & fishing road trips with my dad & brothers. It makes me think of my dad every time I hear it. It is such a living, breathing song...almost like a father-son, parallel-dimension life road trip that started at different moments in time.

I wasn't allowed to listen to heavy metal because of rumored satanic worship, so I chipped in to buy the vinyl with Kelly Wilson. Kelly would keep the album at his house, and then bring it over when my parents weren't home. I can still hear the screech of Vince's lyrics blasting out of our home stereo on "Shout At The Devil," the electricity of the song piercing my soul. And then, my mom coming home early to find Kelly and I headbanging to the Crue. Needless to say, I was grounded for weeks.

If you grew up in the 80s, the Cold War and US - Soviet tensions were REAL. The nuclear threat seemed to dominate the media airwaves. Several movies made their way to the big screen to paint a "what if" picture of a Russian invasion, but there was one that hit me like a ton of bricks and influenced the trajectory of my life – Red Dawn. The fact that a group of teenagers were so patriotic and relentless that they could repel the Russian-Cuban attack, as unlikely as that would be outside of a movie set, inspired me to pursue the military as a career path. From that day on, at the age of 11, I was "all in" on America.

Erik Scott and I met in 7th grade and became fast friends around our shared love of the military. We would remain friends into our late 30s, until Erik's untimely death at the hands of Las Vegas Metro police, in possibly the worst case of police excessive force I've since heard of. My best friend Erik Scott and I began to drift apart in high school. As we both strived to attend West Point, we each knew that the chances of both of us being accepted from the same small high school were very slim. An uncomfortable competitive rift came between us and we went our separate ways. One night, we bumped into each other at a random party, after both learning days before that we had been accepted to West Point. This song was playing that night & we were best friends once again.

Something about this song resonated – I felt like I had spent four years doing everything right, all calculated to get the nod from West Point. I reported to West Point on July 2, 1990 to begin what's affectionately called "Beast Barracks" – West Point's 8-week "special" version of boot camp. Every morning at 5am, we awoke to "Back in Black" blaring through the barracks loudspeakers, followed shortly by cadet upperclassmen yelling in our faces. I have a love/hate relationship with this classic, kick-ass song!

We didn't get out much at West Point, but when we did, it was 24 or 48 hours of mania. Weekend "Leave" logistically required us to stay close, so it was either a trip into the City or to shore in Jersey. My good friend Dave Long was from Sandy Hook, NJ and always offered up his parents' home as our weekend HQ. So many great house parties, dive bars, and dingy hotel rooms on the shore. Of course 'Livin' On A Prayer' was on the top of the playlist.

We couldn't have radios our first semester at West Point. It was tortuous. I vividly remember the day I received the portable stereo/CD player my parents shipped me that second semester. In the box was a bootleg CD of a band my brother Jordan had discovered. A band called Pearl Jam. The 'Ten' album essentially saved my life - got me through those 4 hellish years. To this day, the songs on that album can move me to tears.

One of my first long weekends away from West Point found me in Boaz, AL with my good friend, Dolph Southerland. His best friend from high school, "Bubba" (not kidding), picked us up from the airport in a red Pontiac Firebird and drove us back to their hometown for a weekend I'd never forget. With this Tesla song blasting, It started with Bubba handing me a fifth of Jagermeister and greeting me with a "Welcome to F#ckin' Alabama, Jeremy!" I've loved the South ever since!

When I took my first "real" road trip my sophomore year at West Point, it was a 17-hour jaunt down to Daytona Beach for my first college spring break experience. I joined Dave Long, Dolph Southerland, Mike Burba, Justin Putnam and Chris Spence in a compact rental car on a non-stop trek down to Daytona. We switched off driving; two of us in the front, three sitting in the back, and one of us laying over the laps of those three. We had the Tesla cassette playing the entire way. It was a trip of a lifetime.

This song feels like it has been playing in the background my entire life. One particular moment that races back to me happened during my Army Officers Basic Course at Fort Gordon, GA. There were 30 or so of us in the class and we'd been working hard for a month, everyone going their separate ways at the end of each day. One day, our classmate Jason pushed us all to go for "one drink" at a piano bar. Sure enough, after a few rounds, "Piano Man" was played...and it turned into an all-nighter!

I'm a sucker for underdog movies, but the one movie that has resonated throughout my adult life is Rudy. It's almost become an anthym to me in its own right. It's a great reminder at any stage in our lives that hard work, relentless perseverance, and heart are the ingredients to achieving a big goal, and hopefully, the contentment & happiness that comes with it. That final scene where they carry Rudy off the field gets me every time!

My first job out of the Army was at Raychem, where I linked back up with my old friend & fellow G4 Gup, Matt Halferty. Also up there was my Huh-larious pal, Rich Huh. I lived with both Matt and Rich briefly, bouncing between couches. I was a horrible slob at the time, so they were beyond gracious while I tried to figure out my next move. This song reminds of that crazy year I lived in the Bay – I think it played at the end of the night at every bar we ever entered – and there were a lot of them!

At West Point, we had to take boxing, wrestling & close quarters combat as PE classes. I loved them all. While there, I also met another cadet who was a 5th Dan in San Soo Kung Fu & started taking lessons from him. In the Army, I started training BJJ & MMA. When I left the Army, I started training with Ralph Gracie in Cali, where I met & trained with BJ Penn, one of the best ever. This is his MMA walkout song, which I've adopted to represent my training days. Play it loud and you'll know why!

This was a tough time in my life. It felt like I had to make the move to Vegas and face my demons. I barely made it out alive. My best friend from childhood, Erik Scott, did not. This song was hugely influential to both of us and it's a song we would belt out at the top of our lungs at home or cruising the strip. RIP Erik.

I was living in Vegas – soul completely lost – and dating Kris (my future wife) off and on. She would come to visit occasionally and one visit, this song started playing while we were out enjoying some drinks – and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew I had to get out of Vegas or it would kill me. Something about the tempo, the lyrics, and the way it made me feel in the moment moved me so much, that I change my life course in a single moment. I've never looked back, and hearing it that night may have saved my life.

Our twins Lukas & Delaney were born very premature. Lukas was in the NICU for over a month; Delaney nearly 3 months. I was always a Chris Cornell fan when he was with Soundgarden. Audioslave had just formed and this song was playing on KROQ. I had an immediate connection to it, and it was a song I sang every night to lullaby the twins in the NICU.

I acquired a lifestyle / apparel company that had a warehouse on the famous 17th Street in Costa Mesa, near original offices of big brands like RVCA & Hurley. This song reminds me of this bitter-sweet time. Apparel / Fashion and the lifestyle that comes with it is a young person's game. I was inspired by the creativity of the process and all of the colorful characters I met along the way, but ultimately it was not a lifestyle that would help me be the person, husband & father I wanted to be.

My oldest son, Lukas, was a towhead from birth and grew into a tough, scrappy little surfer-skater kid. "Iron Man" is one of the featured songs on the "Lords Of Dogtown" soundtrack and totally reminds me of Lukas. Lukas loves that movie because he sees himself in those early surf-skate pioneers like Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams and Tony Alva, who were tough street kids doing what they loved.

I always enjoed this song, but it took on a new meaning when my daughter, Delaney, was born. We call her "Laney" for short, so this song "Lady" became a great play on words song. Since she was a baby, I've belted out "Laney, from the moment I saw you, woah, woah – woah woah woah woahhh..." I still do it to this day when she walks into a room. Now 17, I get an eye roll from her, but I told her I'll sing it to her till the day I die.

In 2007, I sold a company to Proelite (CBS/Showtime), which produced MMA & action sports events on broadcast TV. My brother Justin was also involved, and it was such a crazy, fast, and fun 18-months. Attending big MMA fights all over the world, hanging out & partying with famous fighters, and making new, lifelong friends. This song was our anthem, and I vividly remember 20+ of us crammed in a converted ice cream truck screaming along with the lyrics on the way to a fight at Chumash Casino.

We moved to Arizona from LA in Fall 2010. It was a big move for us, leaving behind our Cali family & friends. Something beautiful happened, though...we moved into a neighborhood full of kids who played sports out in the streets, had sleepovers, and ran up & down the neighborhood all day long. Never happens in LA. We even affectionately started calling our neighborhood "The Sandlot" – an homage to the movie of the same name. This song is from that soundtrack, and the picture says it all.

I turned to music to make sense of my brother's suicide, and to reflect on his life and its impact on me. This song punches me in the gut every time I hear it. Many of the lyrics are Justin – "It's better to burn out, than to fade away" | "Out of the blue and into the black, once you're gone you can never come back" | "The king is gone, but not forgotten." The finality of his actions haunt me when I hear this song by the great Neil Young.

He appeared on many popular television shows, soap operas, and movies as a child actor – including "The A Team," "Santa Barbara," and "The Burning Bed." He won an Emmy at the age of 10. My middle son, Gunnar, plays highly competitive youth soccer. He is an absolute terror out on the field when he's "on." He came to me one day after a few weeks of mediocre performances on the pitch and asked me how I used to prepare for competition. I explained to him that I had a handful of "go-to" songs I would listen to before competition – special songs that both cleared my mind and put fire in my heart. A week later, I could hear this song blasting from his earbuds. Proud dad moment.

This excellent TEDx Talk delivered by my friend & co-founder, Brian Mohr, couldn't have been more prescient in March 2019. He called out the dangers of social media and instant endorphin highs delivered constantly though our smart phones every day. Right about the time we began building the anthym MVP in May 2020, I watched the documentary "The Social Dilemma" – a deep dive on the damaging effects of the social platforms we trust most – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. – thanks to weaponized algorithms designed to divide us as people. Thanks to Brian's talk & The Social Dilemma, I have left the vapid echo chambers of Facebook & Instagram and have limited our kids' exposure to all social platforms as well. The serendipitous outcome from all of this is that Brian and I are building what we think is "evolved" social media in anthym, focusing on our shared life experiences & uncommon commonalities to build bridges of CONNECTION, not division.

My son Gunnar's soccer team changed my life. These boys have played exceptionally together for the past 4.5 years, rising to the highest level of youth soccer – Elite Clubs National League. This team is an example of the melting pot – America – actually working. This is a team of recent immigrants – families from Mexico, Argentina, and Venezuela – and some families that have been in the USA for multiple generations. These boys represent the best in sports & society. Regardless of where they come from, what color they are, what God they worship, they play as ONE. They are the finest example of a meritocracy I've ever seen. What's better, the families have become close also – teaching each other new languages, culture & recipes! The boys often lip sync this song before their games, which is always a hilarious treat for us parents. My heart is full when I'm with our soccer family.

Tony Moreno was the father of one of the players (Nick) on my son's soccer team. He died in his sleep at the young age of 54. I didn't know Tony well, but you could tell he had a deep love for his boys, and I feel horrible for them having been robbed of such a great father. This is the song that played during his memorial video montage – one of my favorite Pearl Jam tunes. It perfectly captures the blessing of having loved and been loved in one's life, and teases a reunion in the afterlife with the ones we cared for most. This picture was taken after a win at PRFC Stadium, a week after Tony had passed – the boys lifting Nick in the air to honor his late father.

I heard this song for the first time last week during a virtual memorial for a dad on my son's soccer team. I searched for it using some of the lyrics I thought I heard. Linkin Park kept showing up in the results. I passed over them because there was no WAY this was a Linkin Park song. I finally clicked. It WAS Linkin Park – Chester Bennington basically reflecting on missing signs of a friend's struggle and ultimate suicide (Chris Cornell?). It reminded me of the guilt & helplessness I felt when my brother Justin took his life – I knew he was hurting, but what could *I* do? And then Chester took his life shortly after releasing this song. It's a somber reminder that behind the smile, many people are hurting. Especially now. Be kind, first. Always. Invest in your good relationships. Remove people from your life who are unethical, immoral, dishonest, self-serving, greedy, or mean. Remember – "a moment is all we are."

Covid reminded me of the importance of Home. Sure, our actual home – the shelter type. Home is family, warmth, and love. The pandemic lockdown(s) brought our family closer together, and for that, I am thankful. But Covid also helped me return to another Home – my mind & soul – getting back to my roots...my beliefs, my principles, and my once – now returned – unwavering sense of Duty, Honor, Country. It was tough to put a date on this one. I've been to or watched every Army-Navy Game since 1990. It is, undeniably, America's Game. Its significance in my life has evolved over the years, as a cadet, an Army Officer, and a nostalgic "Old Grad." This year, more than ever, I am most nostalgic of my rockbound, highland home. The pandemic, our country's departure from its core founding values, business struggles and toxic people in my life made 2020 one of the most challenging ever. But somewhere in the darkness, I re-discovered the fire in my soul, and nothing gets me more fired up than the Army-Navy. For 3 hours, these young men will battle as adversaries on the fields of friendly strife. But at the end, they will return to being Brothers In Arms – on the same team. As tradition has it, each side sings the other’s alma mater after the game. The losing team sings theirs first and the winning team sings second... #SingSecond. GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!

We've all had a "Case of the Mondays" at some point in our lives – during school, work or some other routine that may have been less than inspirational. I felt that way every day of my life when I was working for "Corporate America." It wasn't until I launched my first startup that I realized what I was missing. 15+ years later with ups and downs, success and failures, it hasn't always been easy...but I have been happy every day of my life since I left Corporate America to build cool shit with great people. No more meetings with "The Bobs" and definitely no more "Cases of the Mondays." When I first saw Office Space, it was like an exact representation of my life at the time...they nailed it!
