Being born in 1972, I was coming into my pre-teen and teenage years just as MTV was launching. The added element of video took music's profile to a whole new level. I remember as if it were yesterday seeing the music video for ZZ Top's Gimme All Your Lovin'. The car, the keychain, the theatrical elements, and of course, the pretty girls, drew me in like a moth to a flame. I immediately went out and bought ZZ Top's 1983 album, Eliminator, and must've played the cassette on repeat for weeks on end - it was a magical time. I can trace my love for music and the importance it has played in my life to this song and this music video.

As a young middle schooler, I was invited to many Bar and Bat Mitzvah's. Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight was a slow-dance staple at every celebration party. Although I can't remember dancing with any one specific person, I remember every time this song came on there was a mad rush of pre-teens and teenagers eyeing the room to find someone to hit the dance floor - good times and good memories!

My high school swim team was undefeated for all 4 years of my high school experience. Being a part of this team taught me some of my most valuable life lessons including; teamwork, determination, self-discipline, and measuring progress towards a goal. Metallica was there for every morning practice, afternoon practice, competition, in the locker room, and during every drive to/from the pool. Metallica was the 'Battery' I needed to stay charged!

The very first concert I ever attended was KISS unmasked with Anthrax as the opening band. As a huge fan of heavy metal music in middle and high school, I was so excited to see both bands perform at the Holiday Star Theater in Merrillville, Indiana. I was 15 years old and must admit that I was there to see Anthrax more so than KISS. That said, I am happy to have seen KISS at such a young age - what a legendary band.

I experienced my first serious girlfriend when I was in high school. Her family, specifically her mom, treated me like a member of their family and always made me feel welcome. One of the most distinct memories I have from that time in my life is going to the Rosemont Horizon to see Motley Crue perform. It was the concert tour when Tommy Lee, the Crue's drummer, was hoisted up, drumkit and all, to the ceiling of the arena and performed while being rotated upside down - it was a spectacle!

During my time at IU, I shared a house off-campus with Gary Kerzner and Chris Hale. We used to do all of the wild and crazy things you might expect a bunch of 18 and 19-year old college kids to do (and then some). This song, which marks our journey from teenagers to young men, was a shared anthem we used to blast on repeat all the time. Now, some 30 years later, this song reminds me of my college buddies and the unforgettable moments we shared.

I joined the Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy's) fraternity at the end of my freshman year of college. I moved into the Sammy house at the start of my sophomore year and remember blaring this song as loud as I could for all to hear. Every time I hear this song, I think about my time in the fraternity house and the chaos of fraternity living as well as the life-long friendships that were sparked during that time in my life.

I remember driving down I-294 in Illinois when the DJ on WXRT radio Chicago delivered that fateful message - Jerry Garcia is dead. Picking one Dead tune is impossible for any deadhead, but this song brings me back to that moment on the freeway and the devastation I still feel for Jerry's absence. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to the Grateful Dead - their music and stories help me express my philosophy of love and compassion for all of humanity.

Description

I had just received word from my employer that my transfer from Chicago to Phoenix was approved. Prior to my move, I took in one last concert at the Aragon Ballroom - the Halloween Widespread Panic show. I had an extra ticket and ended up giving it to my first-ever blind date. I'm thrilled to say that my first-ever blind date has led to 23+ years of an amazing marriage! Widespread Panic will always hold a special place in my heart as they brought Jackie and me together.

I proposed to Jackie in the Arboretum at Indiana University during a weekend trip for a fraternity brother's wedding. I remember being so nervous and excited to 'pop the question'. Jackie and I have deep roots in Chicago and we both love the Freddy Jones Band. This song is the perfect symbol of how I felt when she said yes - I'm in a daydream (and still am all these years later).

Prior to our wedding, Jackie entered a 'Honeymoon Giveaway Contest' in a bridal magazine. The trip being raffled off was an all-expense paid trip to Costa Rica. Little did she know, the person managing the raffle was friends with Jackie's sister, Jessica, and was able to connect the dots of her maiden name. Long story short, Jackie won the contest! Immediately following our wedding, we hopped onto a plane and headed to San Juan, Costa Rica. During our week-long honeymoon, we took a whitewater rafting trip down the Pacuare River, a class 3-4 river. Neither of us had ever been whitewater rafting, and it was the highlight of the trip (the visit to the Arenal Volcano was pretty epic, too). The Pacuare River is nestled in the Costa Rican rainforest, and we saw some of the most breathtaking natural waterfalls and vegetation. I felt like I was living in the Ewok Village straight outta the Return of the Jedi movie set - it was awesome! I've been very fortunate to experience plenty of amazing vacations since that time, however, our honeymoon was a trip I'll remember forever!

About 3 weeks after the 9/11 attacks, I attended a weekend leadership training in Alamo, NV. The training session concluded with a class graduation ceremony. Our class was the 1st group to graduate on the heels of the 9/11 attacks. I will always remember both the sadness and the American pride I was feeling at that time. Every time I hear this song, I am transported back to that moment in my life.

About 5 years into my tenure with Jobing.com, we acquired a company in San Diego. As part of the new team integration, we hosted our new teammates at our Phoenix office and held a town hall meeting for the whole company. I lead a large portion of the meeting and shared an inspirational vision for the future. At the conclusion of the meeting, I used this song as the 'outro' of the meeting and asked everyone to get up and dance together. Music has the power to unite!

Although this song brings me back to my childhood and the explosive growth of MTV, it is also symbolic of my daughters' introduction to guitar-based rock and roll. From the ages of 7 through 12, they would always me to play this song because of how much they loved the opening guitar jam!

On November 12, 2015, I finally decided to stop dreaming and start doing. I hired a teacher and began my journey to learn how to play guitar. All of the 'literature' pointed to how hard it was going to be to learn a musical instrument in my mid-40s. I didn't care - I was determined to make it happen. It's now been almost 5 years and the journey has been one of the most maddening and exhilarating experiences of my life. One year into my journey, I practiced and practiced until I was able to play this song. While I'm no Eric Clapton, I am a competent guitar player and look forward to the path ahead. If you can dream it, you can do it!

The Mohr family was invited to attend the wedding of my then business partner, Max Hansen, in Maui. We arrived in Maui on a Wednesday and the wedding was set to take place on Friday evening. In the middle of the day on Thursday, Max called me and asked me if I would do him a favor. I said, "of course, whatever you need". Expecting him to ask me if I would run an errand or play some type of supportive role at the wedding (i.e. usher), he proceeded to let me know that the close friend he and Bryna were expecting to officiate their wedding missed his flight and was not going to make it in time. To my surprise, Max then asked if I would step in and officiate the wedding. Wanting to support my friend and his wife-to-be, I said "absolutely". I spent the next 36 hours becoming an ordained minister, working my way through the Hawaii Department of Health & Human Services to become a 'recognized' minister in the eyes of the state of Hawaii, interviewing family and friends of the bride and groom, and writing a wedding ceremony from scratch. Long story short, the ceremony was a smashing success. In addition to the absolute joy of marrying my friend and his wife, seeing my wife and daughters in the audience as I played the role of minister is something I will remember forever!

My youngest daughter, Riley, is a deep thinker and has many layers. Although she prefers the music of today's day and age, she connects with the music and story of Soulshine. I can see and feel how this song speaks to her and gives voice to the feelings she experiences from time to time. In addition to the song 'Sunny Hours' by the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Soulshine always reminds me of how introspective and emotional Riley is.

My oldest daughter, Taylor, and I are HUGE fans of this song. Every time it pops up on Spotify, we immediately stop what we are doing and sing along. And, when my youngest daughter, Riley, and my wife, Jackie, are with Taylor and me when this song comes on, they immediately roll their eyes and wait patiently for the song to finish. It's quite a scene. This song reminds me of Taylor.

One of my adult life bucket list items was to deliver a TEDx talk. In the fall of 2018, I threw my hat in the ring and applied to be a speaker at the 2019 GCU TEDx event. The application process was pretty intense - the grand finale of the process was recording a 3-minute video answering the question, "if you were going to be a fruit, what fruit would you be and why?". To my delight, I was accepted as one of 8 speakers at the event (I wanted to be a grape in case you're curious). The prep process was crazy intense and I had an amazing student liaison, Madeline Hooten, help me through it all. My family and friends came to the event and cheered me on - it was amazing! My career has been greatly influenced by this experience and I'm so glad I decided to do it!

During the first few months of 2020, I was juggling a variety of new projects. None of them connected with my personal purpose as much as anthym. So, in April, I wrote one of the largest checks I've ever written to help build the MVP of our platform. I know in my heart that Jeremy and I are onto something very special and, as Kenny Rogers would say, "you gotta know when to hold 'em", and the anthym hand is one I'm going to be holding for a long time!

During March of 2021, I was introduced to Jacob Reinartz. Jacob is a singer and guitar player and we decided to see if the two of us could create an acoustic guitar duo of sorts. We practiced at my house during all of April and the first part of May. After 40+ hours of practice, we believed we were good enough to perform in front of an audience. On May 11th, we were invited to perform at a surprise birthday party, and we absolutely crushed it! For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to play music in front of people and bring a sense of joy and good vibes to others through music. I'm so excited to continue this journey!

Jeremy and I have been working incredibly hard to get anthym off the ground and bring a whole new paradigm of what team connection and team building should look like post-pandemic. We met for a two-day offsite to finalize a variety of initiatives and plans for the foreseeable future. Before we jumped into the details, we started our offsite by revisiting our purpose and core values. Both Jeremy and I believe that a company's purpose and core values serve as the ultimate decision-making filter. The entrepreneurial journey can be filled with 'shiny squirrels' and easily pull our attention from what matters most. We are certain that 'bringing people closer together' is our north star. We can bounce every decision off of this important statement that drives everything we do. A big thanks to Simon Sinek for opening my eyes to the power of purpose and understanding WHY we do what we do.

As I think about the past couple of years, I'm reminded of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." My inspiration for 2022 is LOVE. I am going to lean into the most powerful emotion of the human experience - LOVE. As a lifelong Deadhead, I can't think of a better song for inspiration than 'Turn on Your Love Light' sung by the late/great Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan. "Turn on your light, let it shine on me, turn on your love light, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine".

Together with my bandmate, Jacob, we played our first open mic night at the El Charro Hipster Cafe in downtown Phoenix. This was my very first experience playing in a bar/restaurant setting with a real live audience that we had no connection or friendship with - my heart was pounding out of my chest! The song we chose, Seasons by Chris Cornell, has some tricky guitar picking patterns and I made a few screw ups, but persisted to finish the song. This moment is a milestone marker in the journey of learning how to play the guitar and perform in front of live audiences. I'm proud of my accomplishment and am excited about the continued journey that lies ahead.

Our oldest daughter, Taylor, is a HUGE fan of bluegrass music, specifically Billy Strings. When she got word that Billy was going to be one of the performers at the 2022 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, CA., which happened to coincide with her Fall Break, it was a forgone conclusion that we'd be going. So, the Mohr Family bought tickets and attended our first ever music festival as a family - it was magical! The perfect ocean breeze, the sunlit skies, the relaxed crowd, and the amazing music made for the perfect day! Our youngest daughter, Riley, had just as great a time as her older sister. I think it's safe to say that music festivals and concerts will be a staple for the Mohr's moving forward!

There are several bucket list destinations I've yet to experience. To choose just one is difficult, yet I think Cape Town, South Africa is at the top. Why? Well, I'm dying to get into a shark cage and see Great White sharks in their natural habitat without the fear of being in the food chain.

There are so many songs I would add to my road trip playlist, so picking just one is very tough. That said, there's something about the unlikely disco beat coming from the Grateful Dead that surprises many (including me). The lyrics, in particular, "don't tell me this town ain't go no heart, you just gotta poke around" feels very appropriate for venturing out on the great American highways and exploring all that there is to see!

I can still remember her walking into my 4th grade math class at Frank H. Hammond Elementary School on Fran Lin Parkway in Munster, Indiana. There she was, Miss McCarthy. She was the very first crush I ever had. Obviously, nothing ever happened, but I still remember her to this day. The song, Centerfold, by J. Geils Band was one of the radio hits at the time (Freeze Frame, too) and the song reminds me of her and this time in my life.

I saw JAWS during my early childhood (late 70's) and it rocked me to my core! To this day, I'm convinced that if I go too far into the ocean, I will be eaten by a Great White Shark. The JAWS soundtrack is constantly playing in my head as a reminder to respect the ocean any time I'm near it. That said, a bucket list item is to get into a shark cage and witness these amazing creatures up close!

2021 saw us continue our anthym journey. There have been many ups and downs as one might expect in building a startup. As I look back at the year, we did not hit all of the milestones and goals we set for ourselves. While it would have been nice to achieve all of our goals, we have learned a ton and, as they say, you learn more from your failures than your successes. Or, as the Rolling Stones would say, "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need".

I don't recall the exact year I saw Robert Waldinger's TED talk, but the impact it had on me has been incredibly powerful. Waldinger is the current Executive Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has been running for more than 80 years. The study aims to answer a very simple, yet profound question, "What makes for a happy life?". Year in and year out, the study has found that the happiest people are those with the deepest relationships in their lives. This powerful insight has led me to lean into my desire to bring people closer together with a focus on the workplace. The anthym platform is a manifestation of this TED talk in many ways.
